The State of Florida is home to approximately 900 species of spiders. While the majority of the spider species live outdoors, there about 20 species that prefer to live in and around businesses and home type environments. However it is noy uncommon for many other species of spiders to end up in and around business and homes while traveling to new habitats.
While many spiders actually have environmental benefits in the eco system they live in, sometimes including and around commercial businesses and homes, they can also be a nuisance and possibly present various health risks to humans and pets.
Only a few types of spiders have fangs long enough to penetrate human skin and venom strong enough to severely affect a human being. Florida is home to four types of widow spiders and the infamous Brown Recluse Spider that can cause serious health issues, and in certain cases may result in death in small children or those with a weakened immune system.
Symptoms of a Brown Recluse Spider Bite
- Delayed burning, pain, itching, or redness at the site of the bite (this can happen within several hours or even days of the bite);
- A “bulls-eye” mark around the bite – a deep blue or purple “bruise” area surrounded by white and red rings
- An ulcer or blister that turns black
- Headache, body aches, rash, fever, and nausea or vomiting
Symptoms of a Florida Black Widow & Brown Widow Spider Bite
- Immediate pain, burning, swelling, and redness at the bite (you might see double fang marks), cramps and tightness in the stomach, chest, shoulders, and back
- Headache, dizziness, rash and itching, salivation, and nausea or vomiting
- Restlessness, anxiety, and sweating
- Eyelid swelling and tearing
- Weakness, shaking, or paralysis, especially in the legs
Even a spider bite from a non-venomous spider may cause skin irritation, rashes, significant bite marks, especially to those who are allergic to spider bites.
